In the News | SAVING OUR PLANET FROM OURSELVES

Norwich, CT (The Day, January 19, 2023) — Professor Diba Khan-Bureau of Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, a renowned environmental engineer, has spent her professional years both in the classroom and in the field, striving to preserve the health and dignity of the natural world, which our own species has so earnestly been despoiling at an alarming rate. And though our species has labored at the deplorable practice of self-serving gains – at the price of other lifeforms on Planet Earth – dedicated activists like this tireless professional stay the course for a better world.

TRCC Students with elementary students

TRCC students work with first graders from Salem School, who are seen inspecting a river simulator last year.

A onetime environmental engineer for Electric Boat in Groton (mid 1990s), Dr. Khan-Bureau sought to make more of a significant impact in the critical areas of hazardous waste removal, air compliance and, above all, the ever-looming menace of climate change, which she feels must be taken far more seriously.

“While at EB and managing hazardous waste, I dealt with harmful constituents that are commonly found in industrial manufacturing,” she explained. “Certain states, including Connecticut, have strict regulations for this process.”

Professor Khan-Bureau makes it clear that many of us are unaware of harmful products we are exposed to daily, such as plastics, which she states are, “showing up everywhere.” And as necessary and important the work this energetic and still young professional was doing for Electric Boat, Diba Khan-Bureau felt she could make more of an impact as a scientist functioning out in the actual field.

“I fear we are systematically impacting our environment negatively and we need to do something about that now. Herbicides and pesticides are destroying insect species. This sort of behavior must be addressed if we are to keep our world healthy. But it’s extremely difficult to change people’s thinking when you consider there are many countries (80%) that actually include insects as a part of their daily diets.”

The gravity of the rising crisis of our kind’s habitually destructive activities impelled the young professor into becoming a more practicing activist in the field of environmental engineering—leading not only into groundbreaking scientific discoveries of her own, but also into the ultra-important area of education and enlisting eager students into the field as well.

“I was credited with the discovery of a new species of diatoms: the Didymosphenia Hullii.” (For those of us not entirely tuned into scientific jargon, a diatom is a photosynthetic single cell organism … of which there are millions!) And Khan-Bureau is among those knowledgeable enough, active enough, and keen enough in her profession to have made such a discovery.

She not only continues with her invaluable contributions in studying and helping protect the natural world — to which she has devoted a lifetime — she has now also encouraged and mobilized a corps of climate and field warriors, forming a veritable student army of environmental science majors at Three Rivers Community College.

“I’m teaching them about the science involved and the regulations that are crucial both nationwide and worldwide regarding the concerns of today,” Khan-Bureau said. “That includes biodiversity decline, water and air pollution, and the peril of invasive species to name only some of the studies involved. My students and I also vibracore (technique for collecting core samples from riverbeds) into the earth to determine how long these species of nuisance diatoms have been in the Farmington River in Connecticut.”

In essence, this particular professor has transcended the classroom by mustering together and leading a team of budding young students that now share her longtime commitments and convictions.

“Everyone needs to take more seriously our responsibilities to this planet,” she explained with an iron passion that runs deep and sincere. “I don’t think everyday people are deliberately trying to ruin the environment, but the public needs to be better educated about our ecosystem and the services it provides for us, while large corporations must be more mindful of consequences.”

Undeterred by the vitriol spewing out from crass radio and television talk show hosts — and from shortsighted legislators who treat the climate change crisis like the punchline of a crude joke, Khan-Bureau forges ahead with her rapidly rising army of staunch science activists committed to the rescue of our natural world . . . and our future.

“I believe in humanity and in the people who are truly concerned. The beautiful thing about education is that it opens the door to knowledge and opportunity. We’ll find a way,” she added with a smile of quiet confidence.

Our planet has a potent player in this woman—and those who are now following the path that led her to a life of purposeful passion. Doctor Diba Khan-Bureau is training them to care enough about what’s happening to our planet and encouraging them to enter an arena where they might assist in turning it around on behalf of a world in dire need of help.

“Well find a way,” this sincere crusader for our environment assures us.

The Donald R. Welter Library at Three Rivers Community College is proud to present “Exhibition #1” in the new Diversity 365 Gallery. “Exhibition 1” features two-dimensional work from twelve faculty members representing eight colleges in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system. All work explores the themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This first Diversity 365 exhibition will run through April 12, 2022 and can be viewed in person in the Library, Monday – Thursdays, 8:30 am – 8:00 pm, and Fridays, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. It can also be seen online below.

Library Director Pam Williams said, “I am thrilled to see this space come to life with these beautiful, interesting, thoughtful works celebrating diversity in so many different forms. I am also deeply grateful to everyone that took the time to answer our call to share such exciting and inspired art with our community.

Nina Buxenbaum, a faculty member in the art department at Western Connecticut State University, had two of her large canvases selected for the show, “Cousins” and “Good Hair.” Buxenbaum explains her concept in her artist’s statement: “As a woman of mixed heritage, I use the ‘Topsy-Turvy doll’ as a metaphor for the way we learn to define ourselves as women in a society that is increasingly diverse and complex and where we are redefining our roles. The doll, whose name is derived from the character of Topsy in the Harriet Beecher Stowe novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is designed to look like a southern belle on one side, but her dress conceals a black girl underneath. Through the flip doll, I explore my personal expression of self, as a biracial-woman, and play with the metamorphosis of identity. I am also interested in the ability of this subject matter to address femininity as it relates to cultural constructs including class, race, and sexuality.”

Thuan Vu, a professor of art at Southern Connecticut State University, had three of his paintings selected for the show. All three canvases explore Kintsugi, a concept from Japanese philosophy which is sometimes employed in the repair of broken pottery and lacquerware. Vu has used the Kintsugi concept to frame trauma, both personal and social.

Kintsugi practitioners bind broken pieces of pottery together using gold. In his artist’s statement, Vu explains, “With these gold fault-lines proudly displayed, the intention of the craftsman is clear: that in this new state, this form is better and more beautiful for having experienced brokenness and gone through the process of healing and rebuilding.” In his Kintsugi series, Vu has explored this idea in his canvases. He explains, “…we all suffer through a world divided: one where our governments, our borders, and our social fabric are all in a state of upheaval. How, then, do we heal ourselves and find a center in which to situate our being?” Vu continues, “In many ways, my paintings look to recreate and piece together a reality that is based on grace, generosity, and beauty.”

Other pieces selected for the show include a relief sculpture entitled “Evolving Shapes of Hope,” by Daryl Simmons, a faculty member in the Mathematics and Science Department at Three Rivers Community College. Simmons is one of several faculty members coming from a discipline outside of the visual arts whose work was selected for the exhibition. All work in the show was selected anonymously by a reviewing committee.

Exhibition #2” is scheduled for the Fall 2022 semester and will feature art from the staff and students in the CSCU/UConn systems. At the close of the series of exhibitions, the selection committee will choose art from the body of exhibited work to be purchased for the Library Gallery’s permanent collection. The purchase of the collection will be funded by the Three Rivers College Foundation. There will be additional exhibitions drawing from the public, and the final permanent collection will include work in a variety of media from the faculty, staff, and students from CSCU, as well as the public. Learn more about the upcoming shows and selection process at www.threerivers.edu/diversity365.

The Diversity 365 Gallery is open during the regular hours of the Donald R. Welter Library at Three Rivers Community College, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am – 8:00 pm and Friday, 8:30 am  3:00 pm.

Three Rivers Community College is proud to present the “Student Art Show 2019-2021” featuring the work of students of the Visual Fine Arts program. The degree provides a strong foundation in the visual arts and a broad background in general education. As a transfer-oriented course of study, it often leads to enrollment in an art school or other baccalaureate institution.

The exhibit includes the following categories which are linked to the webpages showing the student work:

The juror of the 2019-2021 Student Art Show is Susan Scott Kenney, of Dayville, Connecticut. Susan is a Board member of Norwich Arts Center and has held the position as the President of Norwich Arts Center’s Galleries for six years. She has a B.S. degree in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University, and a Master of Art Education degree from Hartford Art School. Susan was an art teacher in the Dudley-Charlton School system. She loved teaching and retired after 36 years. Susan works in a variety of media but is primarily an acrylic painter. Her subject matter has evolved and changed over the years, but her love of color remains a constant. Susan is a member of Connecticut Women Artists and exhibits in a variety of venues.
