Three Rivers Community College, the College Foundation, and Dominion Energy Nuclear Connecticut/Millstone Power Station are again offering 16 full scholarships for the Three Rivers Community College Nuclear Engineering Technology Degree program. The only program of its kind in New England, it is considered the best in the nation. Through classroom, laboratory, and simulator instruction, this program educates students in the theories underlying the safe operation of nuclear power generating stations. For students interested in beginning the program in the Fall of 2022, the application deadline for the scholarship is February 22, 2022.

The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, books, and fees for a two-year associate degree program, starting with the Fall 2022 semester. Additionally, students receive a guaranteed $150 per month stipend during the nine-month academic year and have a twelve-week paid internship experience at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station during the summer between their first and second academic year. This gives the students the opportunity to see nuclear utility operations first hand and develop significant practical work experience.

Those opting to enter the workplace as technicians have found their education and experience in strong demand by Connecticut business and industry. Other scholarship recipients, upon completion of the program, have successfully transferred to nuclear engineering and health physics baccalaureate degree programs in state and nationally.

In the News | Three Rivers quadcopter team takes first place

 

Norwich, Connecticut (The Day, May 17, 2019) —A team from Three River Community College that included five local students tied for first place in the annual NASA-sponsored Community College Quadcopter Challenge April 26 at Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson.

Students were Adam Rugh of Old Mystic, Nate Reigles of Oakdale, Kevin Peterson and Daniel Docker of New London and Jonathan Bermudez of Norwich. The final two students were military veterans.

The team, led by Electric Boat engineer and adjunct professor Yevhen Rutovytskyy, tied QVCC, which had won the three previous drone challenges.

Each team member put in between 80 and 100 hours of work into into the drone, and each student will receive a $1,000 stipend.

The project is intended to increase the number of science, technology, engineering and math graduates, raise awareness of NASA education initiatives, enhance STEM diversity and provide experience with computer-aided drafting software.

“As a senior engineer at a defense contractor, my goal is to help students transcend their ‘comfort zone’ and learn skills that are not ordinarily offered as part of the engineering curriculum in community colleges,” Rutovytskyy, a Colchester resident, said in an email.

Part of the challenge included fabricating a multi-positional camera mount to allow the drone operator to manually switch camera views and acquire in-flight pictures of various targets of interest.

This is the only program of its kind in New England, one of three in the country, and considered the best in the nation. Through classroom, laboratory, and simulator instruction, this program will educate you in the theories underlying the safe operation of nuclear power generating stations. Additional “hands-on” experience may be gained through 12 weeks of summer co-op employment at Millstone Station’s nuclear power plants.  This program operates in cooperation with Millstone Station to prepare you as an entry-level technician primarily for the commercial nuclear power industry. Millstone Station offers full scholarships through the college for up to 15 full-time freshmen enrolling in the Nuclear Engineering Technology program. However, the program is open to all qualified students, with or without scholarship aid.  This career path involves further training by the utility and successful completion of a license examination administered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Dominion Nuclear Connecticut supports promising candidates for this Nuclear Engineering Technology program through its Dominion Nuclear Connecticut Millstone Power Station Engineering Technology Scholarships.

Up to sixteen two-year scholarships are awarded annually and cover the full cost of the program including tuition and fees, books and a monthly stipend.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program will prepare you to be technicians and designers for employment in industry through specialized training and education in statics, machine design, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics, with an emphasis on the design, manufacturing, testing and development of various products, machines and systems. You will have hands-on education and training in state-of-the-art laboratories, on the most sophisticated equipment available. You will be prepared to work alongside engineers in research, sales, or manufacturing industries, and be highly marketable for many different types of industries. Currently nationwide trends indicate that the number of mechanical job openings far exceeds the number of graduates. This program will prepare you for transfer to four-year institutions, especially four-year engineering technology programs.

Special Opportunities

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program has a co-op option that allows the student to work while substituting the work experience for a technical elective. Many local industries are actively seeking and obtaining the Mechanical co-op student.

The General Engineering Technology (GET) program was developed to meet the industry’s need for generalists as opposed to technicians educated in a specific discipline.  This program gives you the opportunity to design an engineering technology curriculum to meet your own individual needs.  GET students are currently employed by Electric Boat, Pratt and Whitney, Connecticut Municipal Electrical Energy Coop, the US Navy, and other southeastern Connecticut industries. Students have also successfully transferred to four-year institutions in Engineering Technology such as Central Connecticut State University School of Technology.

This program will educate you on the general and technical aspects of environmental issues and common practice environmental procedures. The degree focuses on practical education with classes covering the basic quantitative and conceptual skills required of environmental engineering technicians. The curriculum is broad-based to meet the demands of a range of environmental positions. Graduates from this program have gone on to work for manufacturing firms, regulatory agencies, and as consultants or have continued their education at baccalaureate institutions. Due to the expanding environmental industry and high levels of environmental concern in Connecticut, this program has been in great demand.

The “Engineering Science Pathway” consists primarily of coursework in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. The “Engineering Science Pathway” focuses upon building a foundation in the fields of mechanical, industrial, or civil engineering. Upon graduation, you will have received a background in mathematics, science and general education courses for transfer into a four-year program. If you are currently employed in technical positions, this program offers an opportunity to retrain and upgrade your technical skills. Differences in various areas of specialization in engineering allow you to choose electives with reference to their programs of study. Core courses in Engineering Science may be offered at other Connecticut Community Colleges in cooperation with Three Rivers.

This program offers a unique set of courses designed to provide you with the skills required by industry in Connecticut and throughout the Northeast Region. Focused on automated controls, Laser/Fiber Optics core has been incorporated into the program, and the automated controls courses have been expanded to include additional focus on Robotics. You can design your own concentration through project opportunities offered in several courses.

The Program offers core courses in Electrical, Electronics, Lasers, Optics and Automated Controls. Some related areas include Electrical Power/Alternate Energy, Machine Vision, Wireless/Fiber Optic Communications, Internet of Things (IoT) and others. All courses are taught in state-of-the-art laboratories with an emphasis on hands on experience through lab exercises, demonstrations and projects. Upon graduation, you will be prepared for employment in industrial automation, manufacturing/test engineering, product development and other roles in a variety of industries.
