What is a Medical Biller and Coder?

Medical billers and coders play a major role in bringing together patients, health care providers, and insurance companies. They translate the documents in a patient’s chart into codes and spend a majority of their time using their computer to enter data into a billing system or looking for information to clarify notes in the patient’s chart. The day-to-day duties may consist of:

Retrieving referrals
Checking eligibility and benefits verification for treatment
Reviewing patient bills for accuracy and completes, and obtaining any missing information
Following up on unpaid claims within standard billing cycle

Program Description

The Professional Medical Billing and Coding program is a short-term, non-credit training program lasting one year (197.5 hours – 5 courses). These are intensive courses and require students to be prepared for each class. Students need to be able to effectively manage their time to successfully complete this program. Students must take all required courses to receive a certificate.

This program is a fully online, LRON format course. Students are expected to have a computer and a working camera to participate in this program. For those who work a full-time job, have kids, or a busy life. This is the program for you!

Certification

This program will prepare the student to become nationally certified as a CPC-A (Certified Professional Coder Apprentice). This certification is sponsored by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The AAPC is a nationally recognized organization offering professional accreditation, education, recognition, and networking opportunities to medical coders. To obtain an application packet or for more information, visit them at www.aapc.com or call 800-626-2633. Students who complete this program successfully will be eligible to take this national certification.

Prerequisites

NOTE: Background checks are required for most allied health positions. Students with felony convictions may have difficulty obtaining employment in these fields.

High school completion (or equivalent)
Must be at least 18 years of age
Should be familiar with personal computers, use of a keyboard, mouse and Windows 8.1. or higher
You must take all required courses (final grade of 70% or higher in each course) to receive a certificate. The program is one year in length and begins in the Fall.
Textbooks, 1-year AAPC Membership and Certification Exam are included in the price of the program. Cengage Unlimited will be used for all of the courses in this program.

Required Courses

The Professional Medical Billing and Coding Program consists of 5 courses (197.5 hours) that are completed within one year. Students complete two-course in the Fall semester, two courses in the Spring semester, and two courses in the Summer semester. The order of courses below also ensures that you will complete the prerequisites needed to progress from semester to semester. The total cost of the required courses is $4,953 and must be paid in full at the time of registration. Optional Classes are not included.

Course Description

This 37.5 hour course simplifies ICD-10 diagnosis to ensure the most accurate billing and optimal reimbursement for outpatient medical services. The Guide to the Update section lists all new and revised codes, providing quick access to the annual changes. Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting (OGCRs) are listed and also integrated within the code set, providing fast, easy access to the official coding rules.

Course Description

Medical language translates into communication used by all levels of staff working in or around a clinical environment. It is very logical and organized according to body systems, anatomy, physiology and disease processes. A course in medical terminology is essential for students who will be involved in any science-related career. In this 37.5-hour class students will be introduced to the systems of the body and terminology related to each system, along with anatomy. Common medical abbreviations of texts, diseases, and procedures will be introduced. Students will learn about the structure of medical words, including prefixes, suffixes, combining forms, and how to decipher medical words..

Course Description

An introduction to the world of health insurance billing and the dynamic, growing field of health information management. This 45 hour course provides a thorough, practical overview of key principles and current practices, from patient registration to claims submission. Students will learn the ten steps that clearly identify all the components needed to successfully manage the medical insurance claims process. The cycle shows how administrative medical professionals “follow the money.” Medical insurance specialists must be familiar with the rules and guidelines of each health plan in order to submit proper documentation, which then ensures that offices receive maximum, appropriate reimbursement for services provided.

Course Description

Medical Coding IIA is OPTIONAL but strongly recommended.

This additional 20hr course is strongly recommended for national certification. In this course, students will be provided with a detailed review of topics included in the HCPCS and the CPT manuals. Students will practice converting medical, surgical, and diagnostic services into numerical codes. Students will review CPT coding conventions, organization of the HCPCS Level II codes, and the steps for assigning CPT and HCPCS Level II codes.

Course Description

This course provides experience in performing entry-level competences in the administrative areas of the medical office. The material and activities included in the 40-hr simulation provides the student with the medical office experiences and acquaints them with procedures, forms, medical transcription, HIPPA, filing, managing records, scheduling, ordering supplies, billing, coding, utilizing effective communication demonstration involving ethical considerations and managements skills. Using current, realistic medical office cases, students build transferable computerized medical billing and scheduling skills.
