In the News | Three Rivers students had virtual commencement

NORWICH — Samantha Zod, a Three Rivers Community College graduate from Mystic, said she, like many, didn’t expect her graduation ceremony to go the way it did.

“I was on my couch in my slippers,” the graphic design major said.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, Three Rivers held a virtual commencement on Saturday, the first time in its 55-year history according to Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Services Robert Farinelli.

“Today’s virtual commencement will be different from Three Rivers usual commencement but, we will still bring you all of the important parts that matter,” he said during the ceremony.

Three Rivers Community College President Mary Ellen Jukoski reflected on the uniqueness of the current moment during her graduation speech for virtual commencement.

The virtual commencement started with a compilation of time-lapse footage taken in and around the Three Rivers campus. Then, anthropology professor William O’Hare played bagpipes, which was Zod’s favorite part of the ceremony.

“It’s kind of a staple of any graduation ceremony,” she said.

Then, speeches were given. Three Rivers President Mary Ellen Jukoski reflected on the uniqueness of the current moment.

“Your lives are going to be marked by the pandemic in the same way that previous generations experienced Pearl Harbor and World War II, the Vietnam War, 9-11, and the recent national events revealing some ugly and enduring inequities in American society,” she said Saturday.

Jukoski also hoped students would be inspired by these ongoing struggles.

“Can you show us how to create a new world, a world more kind and compassionate, where social justice inequities are addressed,” she said. “Your graduation is an invitation to use your education to begin to heal the afflictions of society by applying the best of what you have learned in your head and felt in your heart.”

The last speech given was from Sebastian Bartosiak, the Three Rivers Student Government Association president. He compared the current semester to the trials and tribulations faced by the characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” “with the trek through Mordor comparable to the experience of social distanced learning, figuratively of course.”

“I decided that I wouldn’t let this pandemic hold me back from creating valuable connections and memories that I will always hold close to me,” he said. “My hope is that you have created your own memories here too.”

For Zod, she felt being at home made the graduation ceremony more personal, since she was joined by her boyfriend and family members.

“It was kind of cool to have that intimate moment as well, ” she said.

For Zod’s future, she wants to work in a graphic design job while working on a bachelor’s degree at Central Connecticut State University. When asked about high school students that might be disappointed in their own socially distanced ceremonies, Zod said it won’t be their only graduation.

“Keep on working really hard, and you deserve the honor of an in-person one as well,” she said.

Three Rivers Summer Classes Open for Registration

Summer ClassesThree Rivers Community College has opened enrollment on summer courses. New and returning students can now register for classes in any of the three summer sessions that begin May 20, June 4, and July 10. Completing multiple courses is also possible as the timing of the sessions allow students to take a course in the first and third session without any overlap.

Taking a summer course is a great way to earn three credits or more in eight weeks or less. Currently enrolled Three Rivers students can focus on just one tough course, like math, science or foreign language, and lighten their course load for next year.

Summer courses also give students from different colleges and universities, who are home for the summer, a chance to complete a prerequisite or general education requirement that will transfer to their school.

In addition to the traditional on-campus classes, Three Rivers also offers 39 online courses. Traditional and online courses range in subjects from US History I, General Chemistry I, Principles of Microeconomics, Intermediate Algebra, Principles of Sociology, Elementary Spanish I and more.

For more information on summer courses at Three Rivers, visit www.threerivers.edu/summer.

New Fully Online General Studies Associate Degree Now Available for one of the Lowest Tuition Rates in the Country

Three Rivers Community College is excited to announce its first fully online degree program, General Studies, A.S., which begins August 28. With online courses that can fit every schedule and one of the lowest college tuitions in the country, this new program can either jump start students on a career or provide a direct pathway to a bachelor’s degree. Residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island are all eligible for this low in-state tuition rate.online student

The General Studies degree program offers a broad focus that allows students to remain engaged in their coursework by studying favorite subjects as well as subjects that are new to them. The open framework and ability to explore academically can inspire students to move in new directions and continue on to a bachelor’s degree program of their choice. The degree program is a perfect stepping-stone for continuing education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The multidisciplinary approach of the general studies program, combined with how students select coursework based on their interests and career goals, make this option an excellent way to prepare for further study. Three Rivers President Mary Ellen Jukoski adds, “The general studies online degree program provides a flexible schedule for students who have busy lives to earn a college degree in a manner that is convenient and affordable.”

Three Rivers graduates can continue to learn online and pursue a bachelor’s degree at Charter Oak State College. Charter Oak is 100% online and accepts every credit from Three Rivers associate degrees. Charter Oak also has a special agreement with Three Rivers that allows students who have earned their associate degrees to attend for their junior and senior year at the community college tuition rate. A student can complete their first two years and earn an associate degree at Three Rivers for less than $9,000 and then go on to earn a bachelor’s degree for an additional $9,000. In total, they will have earned a bachelor’s degree for less than $18,000 at current rates, and that is before subtracting financial aid.

Three Rivers and, through the partnership, Charter Oak are incredibly affordable online options. Many schools offer online learning, but Three Rivers is accredited, a member of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, and offers one of the lowest tuitions in the country. One credit at Three Rivers is only $244, which is significantly less than $320 at the University of Southern New Hampshire, $398 at the University of Phoenix or $570 at the Post University. Financial aid further reduces costs, and sixty-seven percent of Three Rivers students receive financial aid.

The General Studies program is available both on campus and online, so why enroll in this new fully online program? For many the biggest obstacle to going back to school is time. Life is busy. Whether working, raising a family or both, finding the time to take classes can seem impossible. With online classes, students can fit education into their schedule, learning at home when it works for them. Online students still benefit from Three Rivers student support services, online academic advising and tutoring, financial aid experts, career services and more.

The new fully online General Studies associate degree program begins this fall. Classes start August 28, so there is still time to enroll. Learn more by visiting threerivers.edu/online or call 860-215-9016.

1. What is online learning?

Online learning is simply being taught course material by an instructor on the internet instead of in a classroom. This means that you can take a course from any location at any time as long as you have the proper equipment, reliable internet access, and motivation to take an online course.

2. Do you enjoy working on computers and being on the internet?

This is the format in which all work is done so it’s important that you feel comfortable.

3. Are you able to learn outside of a classroom setting?

The great thing about online classes is that you can attend class from anywhere with a WiFi connection – your home, a coffee shop, the park. If you can focus and not be easily distracted, this can work for you. Some online students set up a regular study area at home for their work, even if it’s the kitchen table at 10 p.m.

4. Are you disciplined at focusing on the task at hand, organizing your study time?

This type of discipline is crucial to your success. See number 9 below for a list of traits that will help you be successful.

5. What equipment do you need?

You will need a reliable, relatively recent laptop or desktop computer and access to WiFi. You will also need an up-to-date browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari installed on your computer.

6. Do I need specific software?

There is not much requirement for software. Usually, you will only need the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) and Blackboard, the official TRCC course management system, both of which can be accessed online. All enrolled students are provided free access to Microsoft online through Office365 or via downloadable software. Blackboard is accessible through MyCommNet, the free online portal for the Three Rivers community. Instructions on their use are also available online. It will be important that you understand how to utilize these to ensure your success.

7. How do I communicate with my professors, classmates and the College?

Via email and Blackboard, so it is important that you know how to utilize e-mail and as well as the messaging and discussion tools provided to you by Blackboard. You will be provided a student email and email/calendar/contact software through Microsoft Office. Remember, it’s important to clearly communicate when online. There are no gestures to help you get your point across to your professor or fellow students. Your written words will need to replace eye contact, gestures and voice inflection.

8. Are online classes easier than in-class courses?

Absolutely not. Online classes are as rigorous and will take as much time to complete as traditional classes. You are learning the same material but online. In some cases, it may take more time for you to complete an online project than an in-class project.

9. What else do I need to be successful?

You have the required equipment, know how to use Word and email. Do you also have these important traits that describe a successful online learner?

  • Self-disciplined
  • Self-motivated
  • Can work alone
  • Self-starter
  • Self-directed
  • Organized
  • Achievement oriented
  • Effective at time management

If you have these traits, chances are that you will be successful. If you have some but not all, consider trying one online course and see how it goes. Otherwise, consider enrolling in a traditional on-campus program instead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][mk_custom_sidebar sidebar=”sidebar-19″][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”x-large” url=”https://threerivers.edu/academics/online-programs-how-to-enroll/” align=”center” fullwidth=”true” bg_color=”#99c539″ btn_hover_bg=”#cb1d5c”]ENROLL[/mk_button][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”x-large” url=”https://ct.elluciancrmrecruit.com/Apply/Account/Create?f=6759785a-495c-4e0b-9e46-578f4ea420b7&o=e9769f0e-f028-4274-af53-a21b7d0dd576&s=40bfe6c5-fed1-e311-942a-000c2910616&IsInquiry=True” align=”center” fullwidth=”true” bg_color=”#99c539″ btn_hover_bg=”#cb1d5c”]REQUEST INFO[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mk_padding_divider size=”36″][/vc_column][/vc_row] READ MORE

The online option for General Studies Associate in Science degree program offers the flexibility of earning your degree fully online.

It is designed primarily for students whose special interests cannot be accommodated within a Liberal Arts degree program. With more open electives and fewer required courses than the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree, the General Studies degree offers greater flexibility for individual interest and needs. It is also for those who wish to develop a broader base of knowledge for intellectual stimulation and personal growth.

This program is suitable for transfer to a four-year institution, but the assistance of an academic advisor is recommended to provide guidance in choosing electives. You are advised to check the specific requirements of the institution and major to which you intend to transfer. With your academic advisor, you can create a program of study suitable for transfer to a four-year college, or as preparation for particular self-defined goals.

Benefits

Upon completion of your Associate Degree, you can continue your studies for a bachelor’s degree completely online at Charter Oak State College. Best of all,it will be at a reduced rate. Your tuition will remain the same as Three Rivers tuition. This means, you will save $135 per credit compared to the Charter Oak rate of $298 per credit, or $346 per credit compared to Eastern Connecticut State University rate of $509 per credit.*

*These rates are based on current 2018-2019 tuition.
