Get the Training You Need for a New Career at Three Rivers Community College
Looking for a new career? Three Rivers Community College is offering two courses this June that will give you the training you need to become a qualified Pharmacy Technician or Security Officer. This is a great opportunity for those interested in changing career paths.
Pharmacy Technician – This comprehensive 60-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field as a pharmacy technician where they will work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist at pharmacies in hospitals, clinics, retail pharmacies, and other facilities. The course prepares students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s exam, which is included in the cost.
Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 11 through August 20. The registration deadline is June 6. The course is WIOA and SNAP eligible. Learn more at threerivers.edu/pharmacy.
Security Officer Training: Guard Card Certification – This eight-hour long course is required by the state of Connecticut for employment as a security officer. Security officers are responsible for maintaining safe and secure environments, and job duties include securing premises and personnel by patrolling property, monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings, and more. Students will take the state certification exam and must receive a 70% or better passing score to be eligible to receive the Security Officer Identification Card, which is an additional fee.
The course will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, June 17 through June 26. The deadline to register is June 10. The course is WIOA and SNAP eligible.

What is NOFA Organic Lawn Care?
This is an introductory course about healthier, organic methods of managing lawns and turf, intended for lawn care service providers, municipal workers, environmental educators, and others interested in organic lawn care.
Course Description
This program is designed to inform participants how to reduce non-point source pollution in the Long Island Sound or their local water source by reducing or eliminating excess fertilizer and pesticide applications.
Students will receive instruction in nine (9) subject areas
- Surf and Turf-Making Environmental Connections Between Landscaping and Long Island Sound – presented by Judy Preston
- Soil Basics for Lawn Care – presented by Chip Osborne
- Introduction to Organic Land Care – presented by Chip Osborne
- Fertility and Turf grass Nutrition – presented by Chip Osborne
- Cultural Practices – presented by Tom Barry
- Pesticide Free Management on Athletic Fields and School Grounds – presented by Tom Barry
- Dealing with Pests in Turf – presented by Chip Osborne
- Profits with Organic Lawn Care – presented by Frank Crandall
- Marketing and Messaging – presented by Bernadette Giblin
Via pre-recorded lectures and power point presentations which discuss the environmental benefits of organic lawn care and provide technical horticultural instruction from Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals. This course is being administered by Three Rivers Community College and is offered on the Blackboard Learn platform which allows students to take the online course at their own pace.
Certification
Students completing the course will receive the NOFA Organic Lawn Care Certificate.

The Three Rivers Pharmacy Technician Program is a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program for students seeking to earn their PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential.
What is a Pharmacy Technician?
A Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacological services by distributing, stocking, and assembling medication. Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in hospitals, clinics, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, retail pharmacies, mail-order pharmacies, long-term care facilities, pharmacy benefit managers, or large industrial complexes.
Course Description
Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn:
- Students will be able to list and describe the top 100 drugs (brand and generic name, indication)
- Students will identify and discuss CT state and federal pharmacy law
- Students will compute pharmacy-specific calculations and equations
- Students will identify and demonstrate medication safety strategies
- Students will demonstrate simulated retail prescription processing via online assignments, including customer service scenarios, interpreting Rx’s, calculating days’ supply and dosages, IV drug flow rates, etc.
- Billing and reimbursement.
Certification
This comprehensive, fully online 134-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) exam. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the PTCB exam. The instructor will provide details in class. The PTCB exam is included in the cost as well as the textbook. This national certification program enables pharmacy technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. Students who complete this program successfully will receive national certification.
A final grade of 70 (C-) or higher is required to pass this course.
Computer Requirements
Class time is divided between 84 hours of in-classroom learning and about 50 hours of at-home work, web-based computer simulation assignments. This course will be taught fully online using WebEx for live meetings and Blackboard Learn (Bb) lessons and assignments. Please make sure you have access to a computer and the internet to complete this class. Lectures will be recorded on Blackboard. Students need to make sure their TRCC computer account is active for the current semester and can log in before the first class. This course is not suited for use with Chromebooks.
Prerequisites
NOTE: Background checks are required for most allied health positions. Students with felony convictions may have difficulty obtaining employment in these fields.

- Must have a Highschool Diploma or GED
- In-person Entrance Assessment or proof of recent college credit. Entrance assessments will take place every Monday at 10am & Tuesdays at 2pm. Please call (860)-215-9028 to schedule your entrance assessment. Note: Waiver for testing will be considered for those who have provided proof of prior college MATH and English courses. This requirement is waived for any students who submit SAT or ACT scores that match.
