New Instructional Methods to help you succeed

Because of the Pandemic, taking classes is more flexible than ever. In addition to the traditional in-person, on-campus classes, we’ve created some new formats that will help you be successful in an online class setting.

When you do a course search, you’ll see one of the columns is labeled Instructional Methods. In addition to TRAD or ONLN, there are some new ones. You can expect to see five different course types: TRAD, HYBR, ONLN, LRON, and OLCR.

This page will help you understand what these methods mean as you choose your classes and register.

OLCR – Online and Campus Requirement
These are fully online classes BUT they do require you to come to campus at least once to engage in an activity such as taking a final exam or participating in a lab. These classes can be synchronous or asynchronous.

ONLN – Online
These are fully online classes meaning that you can log into the class and do your work at any time. These classes are asynchronous.

Synchronous
There is a specific class time when you must attend, either on campus or online.

TRAD – Traditional
These are fully on-campus classes. You will come to a specific classroom on campus at a specific time each day the class is held. These classes are synchronous classes.

$20,000 vs $2,278 or less, same basic courses, all online. What’s your choice?

This is the fall semester you were planning …

You’re looking forward to starting your freshman year at your selected 4-year college. You’ve been accepted, you’re going to get the full on-campus experience, you’re hoping to be assigned to a dorm,

This is the reality …$20,000 vs $2,278

Chance are, you’ll be at home taking your basic required college courses online from your 4-year college. And paying as much as $20,000 or more for tuition and fees!

Instead, you could be taking the same basic required courses and paying only $2,278 for tuition and fees. That’s a real savings that could go to pay for your on-campus college experience when they reopen.

Don’t spend big bucks on tuition if you can’t get your on-campus experience this fall.

Go locally to Three Rivers, take your basic required courses that will transfer, and get your on-campus experience in 2021 when their costs become worth the expense. Learn more about tuition expenses here.

Here’s what you’ll get at Three Rivers …

Academics that will challenge you

Courses at Three Rivers are not sleep-through throwaways. They’re rigorous, offering the same 3-credits when you’re done. And if you’re starting your college career this fall, the first few semesters are mostly general education courses that all colleges and universities require.

Fulfill your basic requirements with courses like:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1588945362215{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

  • Financial Accounting (ACC 115)
  • Microbiology (BIO 235)
  • Business Law (BBG 231)
  • Organic Chemistry (CHE 211)
  • Data Structures and Algorithms (CSC 241)
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1588945381086{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]
  • Women Writers (ENG 261)
  • Calculus (MAT 254)
  • Constitutional Law & Civil Rights (POL 212)
  • World Issues (SOC 218)
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1588946707995{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]So, you can take your general education courses with us and transfer them to your four-year college, all for a fraction of the cost. You’ll still get that on-campus experience when things re-open in 2021. See a full list of our course offerings here.

Note: Please note, check with your future institution to ensure they will accept the credits first.

Faculty that care about YOUR Success

At Three Rivers, you will never be taught by graduate students. You’ll take classes with faculty who work here because they love teaching. Plus, you’ll learn in small classrooms that average 20 students, not 100-200 student lecture halls, and receive individual attention. The faculty at Three Rivers will know you by your name, not as a number.

Many of our faculty have real world experience as professionals in their fields. Our faculty include a Fulbright Scholar, a poet laureate,  nursing award-winners, the head of an accounting firm, and an engineer whose pandemic design increased the capacity of ventilators.

Kim Moore, a recent graduate from the Nursing Program, said, “From the moment I came here, every professor, every person that works here was dedicated to making me the best possible person I could be.”

And of course, the cost is significant. Why pay $20,000 for a semester of online classes when you could spend $2,278?

You can take the same required classes you’d take at your 4-year college at Three Rivers for a fraction of the cost. Plus, you can transfer those credits to the college of your choice.

Learn more about tuition expenses here. You might even qualify for financial aid and pay even less.

Stay for two years, and seamlessly transfer to CT State Universities

Our Pathway Transfer Degrees programs allow students to earn an associate degree at Three Rivers and then seamlessly transfer on to Connecticut State Universities (Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western) and Charter Oak State College without losing any credits. In the process, students save anywhere from $13,000 to $60,000.  Learn more about Transferring your Three Rivers degree to a university.

Plus, Charter Oak will charge you the same tuition rate that you pay at Three Rivers for your junior and senior year. Learn more here.

Study at home and stay safe. You can do it at a fraction of the cost.

Enrolling is easy. Three Rivers College Foundation Enacts Emergency Funding for Student Laptops during COVID-19 Crisis

Norwich  ̶  The Three Rivers College Foundation Board, in partnership with Three Rivers Community College Laptops available for TRCC Students. convened to enact emergency measures and approved $57,000 to purchase Chromebooks and Windows laptops to assist TRCC students and faculty during the COVID-19 crisis. These laptops will be available for loan.

As the College migrates learning to an online platform, it has created significant issues for many of our most vulnerable students. Many students have relied entirely on the onsite computer labs at TRCC and do not have access to similar technology at home.

TRCF Board President, Bill Stanley shares, “With uncertainty facing many in our communities, the TRC Foundation is prepared to offer assistance to students and faculty in need immediately. We will support academic success by putting the necessary tools directly into the hands of our hardworking students. We believe in Three Rivers’ students and their ability to succeed, even in trying times.”

The TRCF understand that time is of the essence and is moving forward with distribution beginning within the next few weeks. TRCF Board Vice-President, Chris Jewell, stated “The TRC Foundation is an actively engaged board comprised of members that live and work in Southeastern Connecticut. We understand the hardship many of our students face during this difficult time. Reliable access to technology is a luxury many of our students do not currently have and our hope is that this laptop purchase allows students to focus on building a better future for themselves, their families and our shared community through education.”

Students in need of a laptop may apply for consideration by completing a web form at www.threerivers.edu/coronavirus/student-support/.

If you wish to contribute to this fund, please visit us online at threerivers.edu/giving to donate today. Your gift will allow the TRC Foundation to provide additional support to students as they build a brighter future for themselves, their families and our shared community.

The online option for General Studies Associate in Science degree program offers the flexibility of earning your degree fully online.

It is designed primarily for students whose special interests cannot be accommodated within a Liberal Arts degree program. With more open electives and fewer required courses than the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree, the General Studies degree offers greater flexibility for individual interest and needs. It is also for those who wish to develop a broader base of knowledge for intellectual stimulation and personal growth.

This program is suitable for transfer to a four-year institution, but the assistance of an academic advisor is recommended to provide guidance in choosing electives. You are advised to check the specific requirements of the institution and major to which you intend to transfer. With your academic advisor, you can create a program of study suitable for transfer to a four-year college, or as preparation for particular self-defined goals.

Benefits

The program ensures that today’s students gain the knowledge they need to work successfully in 21st century libraries. It prepares individuals for employment in library positions that do not require a graduate degree in library science and is highly regarded in the library community. With 100% online courses and flexible scheduling options, this is the perfect program for anyone who wants to start a library career or broaden their library technology skill set!

Library technology support staff are involved in all library operations and the training our graduates receive prepares them to perform a wide range of library skills and services. Employment of library support staff is expected to grow by 9 percent from 2016 to 2026.

Program Structure

As it is 100% online, you can take courses from anywhere. Library Technology online courses are three credits and held during traditional 15-week semesters. However, students may condense their work into 12, 13, or 14 weeks upon agreement with their professor.

Students who enter the program with extensive experience in library public services and/or cataloging may consider taking the one-credit Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) course that supports extensive portfolio development. The portfolio is submitted for consideration in lieu of taking LIB K101 – Introduction to Library Public Services or LIB K116 – Cataloging and Classification. Learn more about the Assessment of Prior Learning here.

Tuition

Residents of Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island are eligible to take courses at the Connecticut in-state tuition rates. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont residents receive reduced out-of-state tuition rates through the New England Board of Higher Education program. Learn more about Three Rivers tuition and fees.

Certification

The Library Support Staff Certification Program (LSSC) from the American Library Association – Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) recognizes Three Rivers Community College as one of the few national academic providers of approved Library Technology courses for support staff. Graduates of the Three Rivers Community College Library Technology Certificate program receive ALA-LSSC certification. Students who complete the Library Technology certificate at Three Rivers demonstrate nationally accepted competencies of library service and operations. Our graduates are employed in numerous libraries across Connecticut and New England.
