What is Basic Life Support (BLS)?

BLS is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. This four-hour course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, focusing on high-quality CPR and team dynamics.

Course Description

After successful completion, students should know:

  • The importance of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and its impact on survival
  • All of the steps of the Chain of Survival and apply the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • The importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and demonstrate its use
  • Provide effective ventilations by using a barrier device
  • The importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPT
  • The technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants.


Students completing this four-hour certification course will receive their Healthcare Provider certification e-card by email within 20 days. The certification is valid for 2 years. This certification is a National Certification.
