Three Rivers Community College, the College Foundation, and Dominion Energy Nuclear Connecticut/Millstone Power Station are again offering 16 full scholarships for the Three Rivers Community College Nuclear Engineering Technology Degree program. The only program of its kind in New England, it is considered the best in the nation. Through classroom, laboratory, and simulator instruction, this program educates students in the theories underlying the safe operation of nuclear power generating stations. For students interested in beginning the program in the Fall of 2022, the application deadline for the scholarship is February 22, 2022.
The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, books, and fees for a two-year associate degree program, starting with the Fall 2022 semester. Additionally, students receive a guaranteed $150 per month stipend during the nine-month academic year and have a twelve-week paid internship experience at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station during the summer between their first and second academic year. This gives the students the opportunity to see nuclear utility operations first hand and develop significant practical work experience.
Those opting to enter the workplace as technicians have found their education and experience in strong demand by Connecticut business and industry. Other scholarship recipients, upon completion of the program, have successfully transferred to nuclear engineering and health physics baccalaureate degree programs in state and nationally.

We are aware that many students and families have been impacted by the current pandemic in different ways, and we want you to know that we are here to support you however we can.
If you have lost employment or have experienced a significant reduction in income due to COVID-19, we may be able to adjust the income on your 2020-21 FAFSA to reflect your current financial standing.
Due to the volume of requests that we are likely to receive, along with trying to make this process as smooth as possible, we ask you to complete the following two steps before submitting your materials to us. Please know that we are trying to do everything that we can to help you and your family, but our responses may be delayed due to the amount of adjustments requested.
Step 1
If you have lost employment, or have a significant reduction in your earnings, please compare your current estimated 2020 earnings to what was reported on your 2020-21 FAFSA. Since the FAFSA uses your 2018 income and tax information, it is possible that your 2018 income is lower than your projected 2020 income. For example, if you are a student and lost your job as a mail clerk in March of 2020, but in 2018, you were 16 years old and did not have a job or income, you would already have reported $0 in earnings for the year on the student section of the FAFSA. In this case, there would be nothing for our office to adjust.
Please check the information submitted on your FAFSA (both earnings and individuals reported on the FAFSA) to ensure that the income you need reduced is already reported on the FAFSA. You can check your processed FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov.
Step 2
If the income reported on the FAFSA does need to be adjusted due to a significant change in income, please complete our 2020-21 Appeal for Special Circumstances Form. This form must be signed and submitted to us, along with all required documentation. You may submit both the request form and all documentation as one email to FinancialAidHelp@threerivers.edu. Please note, if submitting by email, all documentation must be sent from your college email, and must be sent using the “encrypt” feature for data security purposes. Request forms that are missing signatures, supporting documents, or that are submitted in multiple emails will take longer to process.
If you have any questions, please email FinancialAidHelp@threerivers.edu.
Thank you.

Three Rivers Community College Professor Creates Endowed Scholarship in Honor of his Father
Three Rivers Professor of Accounting Edwin Muenzner recently established the William F. Muenzner Sr. Memorial Scholarship in honor of his father. Professor Muenzner explained that all of the good qualities that he possess today were taught to him through his father’s example of compassion and impeccable work ethic.

An endowed scholarship at Three Rivers Community College has been created to honor William F. Muenzner Sr.
William F. Muenzner Sr. spent nearly his entire life working to provide for his family. At the age of 17, he graduated from high school in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and began his work life in the grocery business, learning every job that he could from butcher to baker. He also worked as a traveling auditor, which brought him to Norwich, Connecticut. Upon relocating to Norwich, Mr. Muenzner began working at the Mohican Market where he met his future wife of 59 years, Diana Poppleston. In 1958, he began his career at Electric Boat where he remained for the next 57 years, retiring at the age of 80. Throughout his almost six decades of service, Mr. Muenzner commissioned over 100 submarines and served as a loyal union representative for 20 years. When he wasn’t at work, William was spending time with his five children, frequently taking them to his childhood home, watching Red Sox and Patriots games, or throwing pennies in the slots at Mohegan Sun Casino.
Professor Muenzner received his associate degree from Three Rivers and understands the positive impact that financial support can have on a student’s life. “My father was a man who valued hard work and compassion, and because Three Rivers is an institution that values hardworking everyday students,” said Professor Muenzner, “establishing an endowed scholarship is the best way to honor him.”

READ MORECSCU Makes Institutional Aid Application Available for Undocumented Students
Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) President Mark Ojakian announced that the application for institutional financial aid for undocumented students is now available on CSCU’s website. In April 2018, the Connecticut General Assembly passed and Governor Malloy signed PA 18-2, which makes institutional financial aid available to students without taking immigration status into consideration. In ensuing months, financial aid directors and staff at the system, colleges, universities, Charter Oak State College, and UConn came together to create the application to make this funding available.
In accordance with the law, veterans of the United States armed forces who are without legal immigration status were eligible to apply for this type of financial aid for the 2018-2019 year. All other students without legal immigration status are eligible to apply for financial aid toward the Spring 2020 semester.
“A student’s immigration status should never preclude them from accessing a high-quality education,” President Ojakian said. “For too long, many undocumented students have faced additional burdens financing higher education because they were ineligible for most financial aid. This legislation took another important step toward leveling the playing field for immigrant students – many of whom graduated from Connecticut high schools and are integral members of our communities. The application is now available, and I encourage students – or potential students – who are undocumented to familiarize themselves with the process of applying for institutional aid.”
In order to receive institutional financial aid, students must meet certain age, residency, and criminal history requirements along with an affidavit with the institution they are attending about their intent to legalize their immigration status when they are eligible to do so.

READ MORERobert Farinelli named new Academic Dean
Three Rivers Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Farinelli as its new Dean of Academics. He was selected after a national search and started on November 30.
“Rob is a natural and experienced choice to lead our academic affairs department,” said President Mary Ellen Jukoski. “He is a seasoned academic leader from the College of Southern Maryland with thirty years of experience. We are excited to have him join the Three Rivers community and carry on the collegial academic tradition that is a hallmark of our shared governance.”
As the Dean of Academics at Three Rivers, Farinelli will report to the President and administer all aspects of academics affairs, including the development of the leadership team, creation of new academic programs, and the facilitation of student success programs.
Explaining his interest in the position, Farinelli said, “I was drawn to this institution because of its reputation of quality education, strong faculty and commitment to innovation. Helping students achieve their goals has always been a passion and priority of mine. It is always an interesting process to watch them go from high school students to college students to college graduates. One of my biggest beliefs is that access provides education, but completion changes lives.”
Farinelli comes to Three Rivers from the College of Southern Maryland where he served as Associate Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Prior to that, he held the positions of STEM Director; Division Chair of Mathematics, Physics and Engineering; and faculty member of the Mathematics department. He also held the position of Professor of Mathematics at Community College of Allegheny County.
He holds a M.S. in Education from Capella University, a M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.S. in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University.

What is online learning?
Online learning is simply being taught course material by an instructor on the internet instead of in a classroom. This means that you can take a course from any location at any time as long as you have the proper equipment, reliable internet access, and motivation to take an online course.
2. Do you enjoy working on computers and being on the internet?
This is the format in which all work is done so it’s important that you feel comfortable.
3. Are you able to learn outside of a classroom setting?
The great thing about online classes is that you can attend class from anywhere with a WiFi connection – your home, a coffee shop, the park. If you can focus and not be easily distracted, this can work for you. Some online students set up a regular study area at home for their work, even if it’s the kitchen table at 10 p.m.
4. Are you disciplined at focusing on the task at hand, organizing your study time?
This type of discipline is crucial to your success. See number 9 below for a list of traits that will help you be successful.
5. What equipment do you need?
You will need a reliable, relatively recent laptop or desktop computer and access to WiFi. You will also need an up-to-date browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari installed on your computer.
6. Do I need specific software?
There is not much requirement for software. Usually, you will only need the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) and Blackboard, the official TRCC course management system, both of which can be accessed online. All enrolled students are provided free access to Microsoft online through Office365 or via downloadable software. Blackboard is accessible through MyCommNet, the free online portal for the Three Rivers community. Instructions on their use are also available online. It will be important that you understand how to utilize these to ensure your success.
7. How do I communicate with my professors, classmates and the College?
Via email and Blackboard, so it is important that you know how to utilize e-mail and as well as the messaging and discussion tools provided to you by Blackboard. You will be provided a student email and email/calendar/contact software through Microsoft Office. Remember, it’s important to clearly communicate when online. There are no gestures to help you get your point across to your professor or fellow students. Your written words will need to replace eye contact, gestures and voice inflection.
8. Are online classes easier than in-class courses?
Absolutely not. Online classes are as rigorous and will take as much time to complete as traditional classes. You are learning the same material but online. In some cases, it may take more time for you to complete an online project than an in-class project.
9. What else do I need to be successful?
You have the required equipment, know how to use Word and email. Do you also have these important traits that describe a successful online learner?
- Self-disciplined
- Self-motivated
- Can work alone
- Self-starter
- Self-directed
- Organized
- Achievement oriented
- Effective at time management
If you have these traits, chances are that you will be successful. If you have some but not all, consider trying one online course and see how it goes. Otherwise, consider enrolling in a traditional on-campus program instead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][mk_custom_sidebar sidebar=”sidebar-19″][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”x-large” url=”https://threerivers.edu/academics/online-programs-how-to-enroll/” align=”center” fullwidth=”true” bg_color=”#99c539″ btn_hover_bg=”#cb1d5c”]ENROLL[/mk_button][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”x-large” url=”https://ct.elluciancrmrecruit.com/Apply/Account/Create?f=6759785a-495c-4e0b-9e46-578f4ea420b7&o=e9769f0e-f028-4274-af53-a21b7d0dd576&s=40bfe6c5-fed1-e311-942a-000c2910616&IsInquiry=True” align=”center” fullwidth=”true” bg_color=”#99c539″ btn_hover_bg=”#cb1d5c”]REQUEST INFO[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mk_padding_divider size=”36″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
