Patient Care Technician (PCT)

What is a Patient Care Technician?

Patient Care Technicians (PCT) are valuable members of many healthcare teams. As a PCT, you will work in hospitals, rehabilitation settings, physician offices, clinics or long-term care facilities alongside doctors, nurses, CNAs and other healthcare professionals. They provide direct patient care including but not limited to: obtaining vital signs; turning and repositioning; bathing; patient transfers; patient care set-up; performing EKGs and phlebotomy; performing basic life saving techniques. PCTs are valued members of many healthcare teams.

Course Description

This program includes 98 total hours of classroom time divided into three modules: Advanced Nurse Aide Skills, Phlebotomy Skills for PCT, and EKG Skills for PCT. All 3 modules must be taken concurrently.

Upon successful completion, student should be able to:

Describe, demonstrate and record vital signs
Describe the role of the PCT in assisting the patient with their daily activities
Describe compliance, safety and professionalism as a Patient Care Technician
Practice infection control in an acute care setting
Analyze an EKG strip for artifacts, errors and abnormalities to inform the provider
Prepare a specimen sample for the laboratory through appropriate aseptic technique, draw order and labeling/handling
Facilitate patient safety through adherence to regulatory and facility guidelines
Apply clinical skills towards scope of practice to foster optimal patient outcomes in coordination with team members

Prerequisites

Must be at least 18 years of age
GED or high school diploma
Proof of ACTIVE Certified Nurse Aide certificate number (CNAs from states other than Connecticut may be asked by an employer to obtain Connecticut CNA certification.)

NOTE: Background checks are required for most allied health positions. Students with felony convictions may have difficulty obtaining employment in these fields.

Certification

Upon completion of this program, you will be eligible to sit for the National Certification exam issued by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). This program does not prepare you to become certified Phlebotomy Technicians or certified ECG Technicians.

A final grade of 70 (C-) or higher in EACH module is required to pass this course.

Course Description

The Cannabis Industry Retail Certificate was developed to address a growing demand of students interested in entering Cannabis industry. Retail plays a critical role in the cannabis industry, helping educate clients about the effects of cannabis, while ensuring a good shopping experience and ultimately – a good experience with the products. The cannabis industry is experiencing tremendous growth in meeting and serving the needs of recreational marijuana. Students will develop the fundamental skills required to work as professionals in this growing industry that will allow you to quickly walk into a role in any cannabis retail environment.

Students enrolled in this college certificate program will have the opportunity to visit a facility in CT to learn more about this growing field. Dates and Times will discussed during the course and sign up sessions will be available.

Certification

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be ready for entry-level employment in the recreational marijuana industry. In addition, students who complete the program will receive a college certificate of completion and have a strong understanding of the following.

Course Description

CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral networking certification that is trusted around the world. It validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently design, configure, manage and troubleshoot any wired and wireless networks. CompTIA Network+ certified individuals are in-demand worldwide. Students will gain the necessary skills to prepare them for the Network+ certification exam, including establishing basic network design and connectivity, understanding and maintaining network documentation, identifying network limitations and weaknesses and implementing network security, standards and protocols. The successful candidate will have a basic understanding of emerging network technologies, including unified communications and mobile, cloud and virtualization technologies. The CompTIA Network+ certification exam is not included in the cost of the course, but is estimated at $170 when using an MCC academic discount. The course instructor will inform students about the exam application process. Network+ testing centers can be found at www.pearsonvue. com/comptia.

This program is working in collaboration with Manchester Community College.

Required

Course Description

A security certificate is used to provide the security level of a website to general visitors, Internet service providers (ISPs) and Web servers. A security certificate is also known as a digital certificate and as a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. These classes are offered in a progression from beginner to advanced level which will also enable participants to earn five individual industry recognized certifications in addition to the overall Information Security Certificate. The IT Support Certificate is designed to give learners the skills they need for an entry-level IT role. The certificate course teaches skills including how to build a computer and install an operating system, system administration and security, networking, and troubleshooting. This certificate is composed five classes that work in progression from beginner level to advanced level. Participants that take this certificate will also earn five individual industry recognized certifications in addition to the overall IT Support Certificate. We offer free, customized non-credit programs in Personal Care Aide, Certified Nurse Aide, and Central Sterile Processing Technician for eligible students through the Eastern Connecticut Healthcare Pipeline. Developed to address the need for skilled healthcare professionals. These short-term training programs are available to unemployed and underemployed workers unable to attend longer-term training. Course curriculum are developed by Three Rivers Community College and Healthcare facilities.

Benefits during the training

Students also receive support from the EWIB-funded programs (Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board) offered at the American Job Centers (AJC), helping them access supportive services while in classroom training to reduce barriers to enrollment and completion. Examples include travel reimbursement, daycare assistance, and required books, tools, and clothing.

Applicants will be assessed for basic and occupational skills to determine if they are ready for this training, or if they should take an intensive two-week Education Refresher course, or be referred to the American Job Center for other services.

The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) oversees a network of workforce-related programs funded from a variety of sources including the operations of the region’s American Jobs Centers (AJC) which handle the application process for Pipeline programs at Three Rivers Community College.
