Patient Care Technician (PCT)

What is a Patient Care Technician?

Patient Care Technicians (PCT) are valuable members of many healthcare teams. As a PCT, you will work in hospitals, rehabilitation settings, physician offices, clinics or long-term care facilities alongside doctors, nurses, CNAs and other healthcare professionals. They provide direct patient care including but not limited to: obtaining vital signs; turning and repositioning; bathing; patient transfers; patient care set-up; performing EKGs and phlebotomy; performing basic life saving techniques. PCTs are valued members of many healthcare teams.

Course Description

This program includes 98 total hours of classroom time divided into three modules: Advanced Nurse Aide Skills, Phlebotomy Skills for PCT, and EKG Skills for PCT. All 3 modules must be taken concurrently.

Upon successful completion, student should be able to:

Describe, demonstrate and record vital signs
Describe the role of the PCT in assisting the patient with their daily activities
Describe compliance, safety and professionalism as a Patient Care Technician
Practice infection control in an acute care setting
Analyze an EKG strip for artifacts, errors and abnormalities to inform the provider
Prepare a specimen sample for the laboratory through appropriate aseptic technique, draw order and labeling/handling
Facilitate patient safety through adherence to regulatory and facility guidelines
Apply clinical skills towards scope of practice to foster optimal patient outcomes in coordination with team members

Prerequisites

Must be at least 18 years of age
GED or high school diploma
Proof of ACTIVE Certified Nurse Aide certificate number (CNAs from states other than Connecticut may be asked by an employer to obtain Connecticut CNA certification.)

NOTE: Background checks are required for most allied health positions. Students with felony convictions may have difficulty obtaining employment in these fields.

Certification

Upon completion of this program, you will be eligible to sit for the National Certification exam issued by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). This program does not prepare you to become certified Phlebotomy Technicians or certified ECG Technicians.

A final grade of 70 (C-) or higher in EACH module is required to pass this course.

Course Description

The Cannabis Industry Retail Certificate was developed to address a growing demand of students interested in entering Cannabis industry. Retail plays a critical role in the cannabis industry, helping educate clients about the effects of cannabis, while ensuring a good shopping experience and ultimately – a good experience with the products. The cannabis industry is experiencing tremendous growth in meeting and serving the needs of recreational marijuana. Students will develop the fundamental skills required to work as professionals in this growing industry that will allow you to quickly walk into a role in any cannabis retail environment.

Students enrolled in this college certificate program will have the opportunity to visit a facility in CT to learn more about this growing field. Dates and Times will discussed during the course and sign up sessions will be available.

Certification

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be ready for entry-level employment in the recreational marijuana industry. In addition, students who complete the program will receive a college certificate of completion and have a strong understanding of the following.

Define compliance and operational excellence
Analyze plant and human biology in relation to cannabis
Identify the various cannabis products and delivery methods available to the customer
Examine quality customer service to increase sales
Understand dosing and titration strategies
Identify best practices for security and transportation

Course Description

A Web Developer is responsible for ensuring websites look good and function properly. Web developers collaborate with website and graphic designers, monitor website traffic, troubleshoot website problems when they arise, and update websites as necessary. These classes are offered in a progression from beginner to advanced level which will also enable participants to earn two individual industry recognized certificates in addition to the overall Web Developer Certificate. Learning outcomes include:
• Students will learn HTML programming for the web.
• Students will learn Cascading Style Sheet formatting.
• Students will learn some of the most popular web tools such as WordPress and Wix.

Course Description

This certificate is intended for individuals with five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. Candidates should have experience with AWS security best practices, AWS storage options, and AWS networking, have knowledge of advanced networking architectures and interconnectivity options, and be able to design, implement and optimize global, cloud networks. These classes are offered in a progression from beginner to advanced level which will also enable participants to earn four individual industry recognized certifications in addition to the overall Network and Cloud Certificate. Course Description

CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral networking certification that is trusted around the world. It validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently design, configure, manage and troubleshoot any wired and wireless networks. CompTIA Network+ certified individuals are in-demand worldwide. Students will gain the necessary skills to prepare them for the Network+ certification exam, including establishing basic network design and connectivity, understanding and maintaining network documentation, identifying network limitations and weaknesses and implementing network security, standards and protocols. The successful candidate will have a basic understanding of emerging network technologies, including unified communications and mobile, cloud and virtualization technologies. The CompTIA Network+ certification exam is not included in the cost of the course, but is estimated at $170 when using an MCC academic discount. The course instructor will inform students about the exam application process. Network+ testing centers can be found at www.pearsonvue. com/comptia.

This program is working in collaboration with Manchester Community College.

Required

Internet access and computer. Microphone and webcam needed for live audio/video training. This course will be taught using Webex. The instructor will contact students with further instructions one to three business days prior to class.

Prerequisites

CompTIA A+ Certified or equivalent experience and minimum of nine months’ experience in network support or administration; or academic training equivalency.

Course Description

A security certificate is used to provide the security level of a website to general visitors, Internet service providers (ISPs) and Web servers. A security certificate is also known as a digital certificate and as a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. These classes are offered in a progression from beginner to advanced level which will also enable participants to earn five individual industry recognized certifications in addition to the overall Information Security Certificate. Prerequisites

Candidate must have experience in information technology. Preferred experience with Security and Risk Management, Asset Security, Security Architecture and Engineering, Communication and Network Security, Identity and Access Management (IAM), Security Assessment and Testing, Security Operations, Software Development Security. Per ISC²: A candidate who doesn’t yet have the required experience to become a CISSP may become an Associate of (ISC)² after successfully passing the CISSP exam. The Associate of (ISC)² will then have six years to earn the experience needed for CISSP certification.

Duration of Training

406 hours: Class 4 days a week (Full time option. Part-time is also available). Instruction includes instructor and self-study training. The Google IT Support is 150hrs of self-study training, of which 50hrs will be facilitated by an instructor.

In The News | Governor Lamont, Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, and Google Announce Google Career Certificates Are Now Available Across the Entire CSCU System

Connecticut Is the First State in the U.S. to Offer the Full Suite of Google Career Certificates to Their Entire Community College and State University System

(MIDDLETOWN, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont, Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) President Terrence Cheng, and Alphabet’s Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat today announced that Connecticut has become the first state in the nation to offer the full suite of Google Career Certificates across its state colleges and universities system, and that the program is now available to all community colleges and career and technical education (CTE) high schools across the nation to onboard.

Part of the Grow with Google economic opportunity initiative, the certificates are available on the online learning platform Coursera. The program equips people with skills for in-demand jobs within three to six months – with no degree or experience required – at a time when employers in information technology related sectors have reported a skills gap in the U.S. workforce.

“This is exactly what workforce development is all about,” Governor Lamont said. “We have employers that are looking to hire individuals with these digital skills, and our community college system responded quickly by entering into a partnership with Google to ensure our colleges are ready to start equipping students with these skills so they can enter these in-demand careers that pay over $60,000.”

Following an agreement between Google, the Connecticut Office of Workforce Strategy, and CSCU, Google and Coursera will provide a diverse population of Connecticut residents with the training to fill positions in data analytics, IT support, project management, and UX design fields that are projected to grow in the next ten years, with an average starting salary of $69,000. After completing the program, graduates can share their resume with an employer consortium of more than 150 companies – including Infosys, Verizon, Walmart, Wayfair, and Google. Infosys has already pledged to hire 250 program graduates at its Hartford location.

“We are excited about this expansion of our Grow with Google Certificates program and the opportunity to partner with academic institutions across the U.S., including community colleges, which are critical to workforce development and economic mobility,” Porat said. “We believe that to have sustainable economic growth, we must have inclusive growth, and we are committed to continuing to help people develop the digital skills they need to participate in this economy.”

“Starting in early 2022, community colleges in all corners of Connecticut will offer Google’s IT Support Certificate, with other certificates rolling out throughout the spring and summer,” CSCU President Terrence Cheng said. “Our public colleges and universities offer the highest quality education and cutting-edge training opportunities. We are thrilled to be the first in the nation to offer all Google Career Certificates on a statewide basis – it is a testament to Governor Lamont’s laser focus on workforce development.”

Building on Google’s initiative with Jobs for the Future to offer its first certificate in IT support to more than 100 community colleges, the company’s new partnerships aim to help individuals bridge the skills gap by gaining the skills needed to take advantage of job openings. These institutions play an essential role in workforce training with 44% of all U.S. undergraduates attending community colleges, and 7.5 million high school students enrolled in CTE programs.

Through the College of Technology, all Connecticut community colleges will offer credit courses that will include Google Career Certificate courses beginning in spring 2022. Non-credit courses will also be offered regionally using the community colleges’ workforce development offices, with the roll out of the Google IT Support certificate in spring 2022. CSCU will partner with the Office of Workforce Strategy to help initially subsidize these programs for students and job seekers.

The Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL) was recruited by the National Association of State Workforce Agencies to be one of five states administering up to 100 Grow with Google scholarships for veterans and their spouses. The scholarships will be distributed through the American Job Center by CTDOL’s Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program specialists who work directly with veterans to meet their employment training needs.

“The Connecticut Department of Labor is proud to be one of only five states with Grow with Google scholarships for veterans and their spouses,” Connecticut Labor Commissioner Danté Bartolomeo said. “With certificate programs in technology, analytics, and project management, we can prepare the workforce of the future and help Connecticut’s veterans by providing free access to certifications that will help them prepare for, find, and retain good-paying jobs in growing industries.”

The Google Career Certificates have a track record of helping people rapidly skill and obtain in-demand jobs. Fifty-three percent of graduates identify as Black, Latino, female, or veteran, and eighty-two percent of graduates report a positive career impact within six months of completion, such as a raise, promotion, or new job.
